The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released its final report into a 2021 runway overrun involving a Dornier 328-100 aircraft operated by Dornier Aviation Nigeria AIEP (DANA) Limited, registration 5N-BUN, closing out an investigation that has run for more than five years.
The incident occurred on 14 March 2021, when the aircraft, operating scheduled flight DAV487 from Port Harcourt Military Airport to Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, overran the runway after landing on Runway 18L. The flight was the aircraft's third sector of the day, carrying 20 persons including two cockpit crew, one cabin crew member and an aircraft maintenance engineer.
Crew Reported the Overrun to Tower
According to the report, air traffic control asked the crew to confirm that operations were normal shortly after landing, to which the crew replied that they were not, stating "we over ran the runway." The crew shut down the aircraft's engines using the auxiliary power unit and briefed passengers and cabin crew before all occupants disembarked normally by shuttle bus, without injury.
The investigation, conducted under the Civil Aviation (Investigation of Air Accidents and Incidents) Regulations and ICAO Annex 13, examined landing performance factors including runway conditions, approach speed and aircraft weight and balance at the time of landing.
Recommendations and Closure
With the final report now published, the NSIB has formally closed its file on the occurrence, having previously issued an interim statement and preliminary findings while its investigation was ongoing. The Bureau's Director-General, Capt. Alex Badeh, has pointed to the DANA report as one of several older files the Bureau has worked to clear as part of a broader push to reduce Nigeria's backlog of unresolved accident investigations, alongside similar case closures for other operators in 2026.
