The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has secured ISO 9001:2015 quality certification for its aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi, and Owerri airports, expanding the total number of NiMet locations holding the international certification to eight.
The certification followed an independent third-party audit conducted by Certech Incorporated of Canada between 20 and 23 July 2026, assessing NiMet's aeronautical meteorological products and services at Modibbo Adama International Airport, Yola; Osubi Airport in Delta State; and Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri. The agency was also recertified at its previously certified locations — Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport — bringing the total to eight certified airports, with the certification valid until 2029 subject to annual surveillance audits.
Following a Ministerial Directive
NiMet said the achievement followed a directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, urging the agency to strengthen safety compliance and improve Nigeria's standing with the World Meteorological Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization. NiMet Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, described the certification as a major milestone, crediting the agency's Quality Management System team and reaffirming a commitment to raising operational standards across all NiMet locations.
Why Weather Certification Matters for Aviation
NiMet said accurate and reliable meteorological information is critical to flight planning, take-off and landing decisions, route management, and the broader safety of air operations, making the certification particularly significant for the aviation sector. The agency said the latest expansion forms part of its broader effort to extend ISO-certified aeronautical meteorological services across more of Nigeria's international and domestic airports.
