The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has reported measurable operational progress and improved safety oversight through the first half of 2026, according to a mid-year performance review. The agency, which serves as Nigeria's Air Navigation Service Provider, said it maintained uninterrupted air traffic management services across the country's Flight Information Region, ensuring safe aircraft separation and orderly movement of domestic and international flights.
Under the leadership of Managing Director and Chief Executive Farouk Ahmed Umar, NAMA has continued rehabilitation and upgrading of critical navigation equipment, part of an ongoing effort to modernise Communications, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) infrastructure. The agency also sustained calibration and maintenance of navigational aids, communication facilities and surveillance equipment to remain compliant with international operational standards.
Staff Welfare and Training Investment
During the first half of the year, NAMA prioritised staff motivation and professional development, maintaining training programmes for technical personnel to keep pace with evolving global aviation standards. The agency entered 2026 facing rising aircraft movements, ageing infrastructure and funding constraints, and its mid-year review credits sustained investment in personnel and equipment maintenance with helping preserve service reliability despite those pressures.
Challenges Still Ahead
Industry stakeholders cited in the review say additional investment in modern surveillance systems, communication networks, cybersecurity, backup power and calibration capability will be necessary for Nigeria to keep pace with global air navigation standards. NAMA's own assessment frames the second half of 2026 as an opportunity to consolidate gains by accelerating technology upgrades and expanding surveillance capabilities, alongside a separate N21.68 billion federal allocation approved earlier in the year for a new NAMA headquarters in Abuja.
