Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has officially signed the concession agreement for Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, formalising the transition to private sector involvement in the management of the airport and marking a significant milestone in Enugu State's rapidly accelerating aviation development agenda.
The signing ceremony was held at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport itself, reflecting the symbolic importance of the occasion to Enugu State and to South-East Nigeria more broadly. The concession marks the first time the airport's commercial and operational management has been placed under a structured private sector arrangement, with the expectation that private management will accelerate infrastructure improvements, enhance passenger experience, and attract increased airline services.
A Convergence of Aviation Milestones for Enugu
The concession signing represents the third major aviation milestone for Enugu State within a twelve-month period. The first was the launch of Enugu Air on 7 July 2025, commissioned by Governor Peter Mbah, which made Enugu the latest Nigerian state to operate its own carrier. The second was the presentation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport's Aerodrome Certificate by the NCAA to FAAN in April 2026 — confirming for the first time that the airport meets the full suite of safety and operational standards required under Nigerian civil aviation regulations.
The concession agreement now adds commercial and management reform to what has already been achieved on safety certification and airline establishment, creating a comprehensive framework for Akanu Ibiam Airport to develop as a regional hub for South-East Nigeria rather than simply a secondary airport.
What the Concession Is Expected to Deliver
Private airport concessions in Nigeria have historically focused on upgrading terminal infrastructure, improving ground handling, introducing international retail and commercial revenue streams, and enhancing passenger facilitation standards. At Akanu Ibiam Airport, which serves a densely populated region with strong demand for both domestic and international connectivity, the primary opportunities include terminal expansion to handle increased capacity, the development of international arrival and departure facilities, and the improvement of supporting infrastructure including access roads and parking.
Enugu Air's growth as a scheduled carrier will also benefit from improved airport infrastructure at its home base, with a better-equipped terminal enabling the airline to offer improved passenger services and attracting codeshare interest from larger domestic and international carriers.
The Federal Government's willingness to concession the airport — combined with the NCAA aerodrome certification and the establishment of Enugu Air — signals a coordinated approach to aviation development in the South-East that reflects both commercial opportunity and regional connectivity priorities.
