NAMA to Replace VHF Radio Equipment at Eight Sites to Boost Airspace Communication

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency said it would begin replacing Very High Frequency radio equipment at eight existing remote sites and add six new locations, aiming to close communication gaps between pilots and air traffic controllers across the country's airspace.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency said in April 2019 it would replace Very High Frequency radio equipment at eight existing remote sites in Lagos, Kano, Wukari, Sokoto, Ilorin, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Maiduguri under its Extended Range VHF Coverage project, with agency spokesperson Khalid Emele saying the equipment had already been delivered. The upgrade formed part of a broader push to modernise the country's communication, navigation and surveillance infrastructure.

Coverage to Expand to Six More Sites

NAMA said it planned to add six new VHF sites in Jos, Kaduna, Yola, Enugu, Benin and Calabar, bringing the national network to 14 locations designed to close signal gaps that had periodically hampered communication between pilots and controllers in parts of Nigeria's airspace. The agency said plans were also in place to extend the range of long-range backup radios following passage of the 2019 budget, with the eventual aim of achieving overlapping signal coverage across the entire country.
