NAMA Deploys New Radar Coverage for Southern Airspace

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) activated new radar coverage over southern Nigerian airspace on 14 January 2016, closing a surveillance gap that had previously forced controllers to rely on procedural separation based on pilot position reports.

Reduced Separation, More Capacity

With radar coverage in place, NAMA said controllers could apply reduced separation minima on affected routes, effectively increasing airspace capacity during peak traffic periods without compromising safety margins.

Part of a Wider Surveillance Programme

The agency said the southern radar activation was one part of a broader programme to extend radar coverage across Nigerian airspace, with further sites planned pending funding approval.
