Ibom Air, the airline established and wholly funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government, launched commercial operations on 18 June 2020 with its inaugural flight between Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo and Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, becoming the first new entrant to Nigeria's domestic airline market in several years.
A State-Backed Carrier
The airline began scheduled service with a small fleet of Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets configured for domestic routes, with plans to add Abuja and Port Harcourt to its network in the following months. Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel described the airline as central to the state's economic diversification strategy, positioning Uyo as a regional aviation hub for the South-South and reducing residents' reliance on road travel to Lagos and Abuja.
Ibom Air's launch came just weeks after Nigeria's domestic aviation sector reopened from an extended COVID-19 lockdown, a timing industry observers noted reflected confidence in a recovery in air travel demand despite the pandemic's disruption to the wider sector.
