FAAN Begins Reconstruction of Enugu Airport Runway

The project followed years of complaints from airlines over the runway's deteriorating surface, which had already forced some operators to limit the aircraft types they scheduled into the airport.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) began full reconstruction of the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on 5 October 2017, following years of complaints from airlines about the surface's deteriorating condition.

Constrained Operations Beforehand

In the period leading up to the project, several carriers had limited the aircraft types they scheduled into Enugu, citing concerns about runway surface quality, which had reduced the range of services available to passengers in the south-east.

A Multi-Phase Project

FAAN said the reconstruction would proceed in phases to allow continued, if restricted, use of the airport during construction, with a full reopening timeline to depend on the pace of the works.
