The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has unveiled V-Pass, a biometric facial recognition system designed to let passengers travelling through its domestic airports verify their identity without presenting physical identification documents.
FAAN announced the platform via its official X account, describing it as part of a broader digital transformation programme aimed at speeding up passenger processing, strengthening airport security, and improving the overall travel experience. The rollout follows the Federal Executive Council's approval in April 2026 of a biometric passenger identity verification system as part of wider aviation sector reforms. Under the system, developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, Nigerian passengers will register using their National Identification Number together with a facial biometric capture, while foreign passengers will enrol using their international passports through optical character recognition and biometric authentication.
How the One-Time Enrolment Works
FAAN's Director of Commercial and Business Development, Adebola Joy Agunbiade, said travellers who complete a one-time registration will no longer need to produce a physical ID card at check-in or the boarding gate, since their identity will instead be authenticated at automated electronic gates using facial recognition. The system checks passengers before they enter restricted areas and again before boarding, a dual-verification step intended to prevent impersonation and unauthorised access. Developers say biometric processing takes under 30 seconds once a passenger is enrolled, while first-time registration takes about a minute, with passengers able to use self-service kiosks or FAAN staff assistance during rollout.
Data Privacy and Next Steps
FAAN said the platform was built with data privacy as a core design principle and complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation. The authority added that further updates on public sensitisation and the nationwide rollout schedule across its domestic airports would be communicated in due course, describing V-Pass as part of its commitment to technology-driven passenger facilitation.
