United Nigeria Airlines is introducing its first widebody aircraft operation, using an Airbus A330 leased from Turkish carrier Air Anka Airlines, as the airline pushes further into long-haul international service. The aircraft, the first of two A330s planned for delivery between July and October 2026, arrived as part of the carrier's broader fleet expansion strategy.
Since beginning operations in February 2021 with a maiden Lagos-Enugu flight and four aircraft, United Nigeria Airlines has built its network primarily around Embraer ERJ-145 regional jets serving domestic and nearby regional routes. The addition of widebody capacity marks a new phase for the carrier, which has stated ambitions to launch intercontinental service to destinations including New York, Dubai, Jeddah, Rome and the United Kingdom, subject to regulatory approvals.
Fleet Expansion Underpinning the Push
The A330 delivery is part of a wider fleet growth plan that chairman Prof. Obiora Okonkwo says will take the airline from 10 to 21 aircraft, including six Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft acquired from Southwest Aviation. The airline has also transitioned to an Aircraft Maintenance Organisation structure as groundwork for eventually establishing its own maintenance, repair and overhaul facility.
Regulatory Approvals Still Pending
While the federal government has approved routes including New York, Dubai and Canada for the carrier, the timeline for launching each destination will depend on additional regulatory clearances from the respective foreign aviation authorities, as well as the airline's own operational readiness to sustain widebody long-haul service alongside its existing domestic and regional network.
